Application Process
Applications will close on 20th January 2025.
Once you apply, your online application and supporting documents will be considered by our Admissions Team. The application review process usually takes several weeks and we appreciate your patience. Please read our section below on what must be included in your application, incomplete applications will not be considered.
If your application is taken forward to the next stage you will be invited to attend an interview on Wednesday 12th February. For those candidates not based in the UK this interview will be conducted online.
Interviews will be conducted by three members of HetSys staff, and a mutual decision reached by them. Admissions decisions will be communicated to you via HetSys administration as soon as is feasibly possible.
Your application – what to include
Please note that non complete applications will not be processed.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold, or be expected to achieve, an Upper Second Class Honours degree from a UK University, or the equivalent qualification and grade from a non-UK University.
- Please upload your certificate and/or transcript.If you have not finished your degree please upload an interim transcript.
- If your qualification documents are not in your current name please also provide evidence of your change of name, e.g. marriage certificate or affidavit.
- For Chinese qualifications, we require your degree and graduation certificate to confirm award.
- Where original documents are not in English we require official English translations and a copy of the original document.
Personal Statement
Please draft a brief (4,500 characters maximum) personal statement that:
- Explains your interest in your chosen PhD project
- Describe your academic history, skills, expertise, professional experience and awards or publications and how these prepare you for the HetSys training programme (300 words maximum).
- Describe how your skills and interests match with your chosen PhD project or projects. You might want to consider the significance of the project and any prior engagement with relevant topics (300 words maximum).
- Describes how being a part of the HetSys CDT will help you to achieve any future career plans (300 words maximum).
- If you have a CV please also upload this.
Research Proposal
- You do not need to write a research proposal as you are applying to specific projects, instead please upload a document detailing:
- ·The name of your preferred projects in order (with 1 being your preferred), maximum of three projects.
Referees
You must provide contact details for your nominated referees. Please use a company or institution address where possible:
- 2 references from Academic staff who have taught you on your current or most recent degree.
- The University will accept professional references if you have been out of higher education for over two years. These must be submitted by your current or most recent line manager. Please note that personal references, such as those from family and friends, are not acceptable.
- Provide contact details for your nominated referee(s) below. Please use an institution or company email address where possible.
- Please note that we will verify referee emails to ensure they come from legitimate sources. If your reference cannot be verified or is fraudulent, your application may be withdrawn.
- Immediately after you have submitted your application, we will email them to request a reference on your behalf. It is your responsibility to ensure that your referee supplies a reference.
