Update 23rd March 2020
Dear Maths Students,
I’m writing with another update on the progress towards assessment in Term 3. The most useful news I have is that we now have a webpage with Departmental information at
https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/maths/undergrad/coronavirus
It is not a replacement for the University information, but simply tells you the Departmental-specific situation.
Beyond that, I’m afraid that we still do not know exactly how the university will run assessment. However they are making progress in understanding the mechanisms that will be needed for all the different subjects and departments, in order to make a system that will be fair for students across the various faculties.
In particular, the University consulted all Departments again this morning on the ideas that could work in different subjects, and the online resources that would be needed. The senior management of the University will soon reply to us with plans for the next steps towards assessment, and, importantly, timeframes for letting students know what to expect.
My best academic advice continues to be that you should study and revise as you usually would. Work on exercises, absorb the content of lectured worked examples, understand the statements of theorems and their proofs and all the associated definitions of terms. As mathematicians, the material you learn in these days will give you greater strength in any assessment, and, if you are not in your final year, it will without doubt help you in your future study of maths at Warwick.
At this stage I do not have a timetable for more information to become available. I will write again on Friday 27 March at the latest in any case, and if I hear information that I can pass on sooner than that then I will contact you immediately.
As always, please continue to stay safe, practise social distancing (and remind yourself exactly what that entails from time to time), and look after your own wellbeing and that of your friends and family by maintaining contact by safe means such as social media, or even an old-fashioned phone call home.
John
