Mathematics at Work: mathematics in the investment management industry (in person)
Tuesday 17th October 3-4.00pm, Social Sciences SO.11

This talk aims to provide an introduction to some of the areas of mathematics used within the investment management industry. We will cover an overview of the industry and introduce some of the key concepts that underpin much of the work performed in analysing investments and portfolios. Topics covered include risk analysis as well as portfolio management and optimisation. The use of multi-factor models for analysing risk and expected return will also be introduced. More recent developments in the area of data science will also be covered. We will also provide some ideas about the kinds of skills and knowledge that students considering a career in this area might find useful.

Mathematics at work: data and analytics in the retail industry (online)
Wednesday October 18th 3-4,00pm

This talk will cover some of the applications of mathematics, statistics and machine learning that we use to run a supermarket. As well as exploring how some mathematical techniques are used to forecast stock and predict what customers might buy, the talk will also cover some emerging areas of Generative AI and where this new branch of Artificial Intelligence could be used to help customers".
