BSc Specifications - for those students whose programme of study starting in 2021/22 or later

For students whose programme of study began in 2021/22 or later, general regulations governing BSc programmes (G100, G101, GL11, GL12 and G1NC in the case of the mathematics department) can be seen in the University’s Credit and Module Framework and Rules for AwardLink opens in a new window. Please note carefully that these are not the only regulations governing your programme of study, you will also need to look at the departmental regulations governing your programme of study for each year which are described elsewhere in this handbook. These can be found via the expanding menus in the the left hand sidebar of this handbook.

Which Rules for Award apply to you depends on which academic year your programme of study began in.

These main details of these are summarised as below but please see the links above for the full details of the rules which will be applied. To be awarded BSc Honours:

  • Students must take at least 360 CATS over their full programme of study, this is met by taking at least the normal load of 120 CATS in each of the three years of study.

  • Students can take no more than 150 CATS of FHEQ Level 4 modules (those generally with codes xx1xx) over their full programme of study.

  • Students can take no more than 30 CATS of FHEQ Level 4 modules (those generally with codes xx1xx) after year 1.

  • Students must pass at least 90 CATS of FHEQ Level 6 or higher modules (those generally with codes xx3xx,xx4xx) during their full programme of study (likely to all be taken in year 3).

  • The pass mark for modules at FHEQ Levels 4,5,6 (those generally with codes of xx1xx, xx2xx, xx3xx respectively) is 40% and the pass mark for modules at FHEQ Level 7 (those generally with codes xx4xx) is 50%.

See General Information about Regulations for a full explanation of FHEQ levels and their relationship to module codes.

To progress from year 1 to year 2 and from year 2 to year 3 students must

  1. Pass all required core modules (where they exist)
  2. Achieve an overall year average greater than or equal to 40
  3. Pass 90 CATS of modules

To be awarded a BSc Honours degree at the end of year 3 students must achieve, a year 3 average greater than or equal to 40, and overall average greater than or equal to 40 (using the year weightings describe in degree programmes) and have passed 90 CATS of modules at FHEQ Level 6 or higher.

Note that if students do not pass 90 CATS of modules at FHEQ Level 6 or higher but do pass 60 CATS of modules at FHEQ Level 5 or higher then they can be awarded a Pass degree if their overall average, using the year weightings described in degree programmes) is greater than or equal to 35.
