Course Transfers

Course Transfers

All course transfer requests can be made on eVision. All transfers into maths and within maths are at the discretion of the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

All transfers must be requested before 1st August for the changes to take effect by the start of the next academic year.

Deadlines for internal transfers between BSc and MMath

  • In Year 1: This can be requested at any point*.
  • In Year 2
    • From MMath to BSc: This can be requested at any point*.
    • From BSc to MMath: Wait until you have your end-of-second-year mark before requesting the transfer. You need to have taken both MA263 and MA266 and satisfy progression criteria set out in the G103 course specs.
  • In Year 3
    • From MMath to BSc: Make the transfer request by the beginning of Term 3.
If you have a postgraduate offer that is conditional on your third-year results (e.g. Cambridge Part III), please contact the Taught Programmes Office for further advice.
    • From BSc to MMath: Make the transfer request by the beginning of Term 3.
You must satisfy both the Year 2 and Year 3 progression criteria for G103.
  • In Year 4: If you would like to leave with a BSc instead of completing the 4th year of the MMath, you must let the Taught Programme Office know by the end of Term 1. After this deadline, we will now only consider cases where there have been mitigating circumstances in the fourth year.

*If you wish the transfer to take place within the current academic year, make the transfer request by the end of Term 2. After this date, we will not be able to process any course transfers until after the marks have been released in the summer.

Transfers between Mathematics and GL11 or G1NC

Transfer between courses while your home department is Mathematics (i.e. BSc Maths, MMath, Maths and Business (G1NC) years one and two, Maths and Economics (GL11) years one and two) is straightforward provided you have taken the necessary prerequisite modules.

For example, as a first-year G100 student wishing to transfer to GL11 Maths and Economics, you can either a) register for EC107 and transfer immediately at the start of year 1, or, b) take EC106 and transfer at the end of year 1.

We highly recommend that you discuss your decision with your tutor.

Transfers out of Mathematics

You must first speak to the department you wish to transfer to about their criteria and whether or not they are prepared to take you.

You should also discuss your decision with your tutor, although the final decision is up to the receiving department. Once they have accepted you, they will ask us to initiate the transfer.

In general, the earlier it is in your degree programme, the easier it is to transfer. Here are some guidelines for transfers in Year 1.

  • Transferring to Statistics. The general guidance is set out in the Statistics Handbook for External Students.
    • Data Science or MORSE: If possible do this right at the start of your degree programme. You should also enquire with the Statistics Department about this. If you are interested in data science, operational research, statistics and economics then it is still possible to study a good number of the modules that students on Data Science or MORSE would study without transferring.
    • Maths and Statistics: You should take ST121 Statistics Laboratory.
  • Transferring to Maths and Physics: the Physics Department recommends taking PX156, PX155 and PX157.
  • Transferring to Maths and Philosophy: You should take both PH142 Central Themes in Philosophy (as an Unusual Option) and PH136 Logic I: Introduction to Symbolic Logic (List A). See this Philosophy Department webpageLink opens in a new window for more details.
  • The Computer Science department does not take transfers to Discrete Maths at the end of year 1.

Transfers into the first year of Mathematics

The current very high number of maths students means that you will need an exceptional set of results to transfer in from other departments.

As a minimum, you would be required to satisfy our entry requirements (typically A*A*A and TMUA or STEP), but this is not a guarantee of acceptance.

Please speak to your departmental tutor first, then contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies for maths.

Transfers into the second year of Mathematics

The current very high number of maths students means that you will need an exceptional set of results to transfer in from other departments. You must also have taken the appropriate maths modules for external students in your first year.

You should wait until you have your end-of-first-year exam results. Then, speak to your departmental tutor, and contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies for maths.

As a minimum, you would be required to satisfy our entry requirements (typically A*A*A and TMUA or STEP), but this is not a guarantee of acceptance.

Next, you must gain at least 80% overall (your end of year average) and over 70% in all of the following modules

  • MA149 Linear Algebra or MA148 Vectors and Matrices
  • MA147 Mathematical Methods and Modelling 1 and MA145 Mathematical Methods and Modelling 2
  • Both MA140 Mathematical Analysis 1 and MA152 Mathematical Analysis 2, or, both MA142 Calculus 1 and MA143 Calculus 2
  • MA138 Sets and Numbers

(ST120 Introduction to Probability would also be desirable for students not from the Statistics Department.)

You will know the final module mark for MA140 or MA142 during Term 2, so if that result is less than 70% then you will not be able to transfer.

The final decision would still be at the discretion of the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Transfers into Mathematics at the end of the second year

Transfer into the Mathematics department at the end of the second year is rare and only offered to students of very high mathematical calibre. It would require all the above transfer criteria to be satisfied whilst also fulfilling regulations for the second year of G100 or G103 (with the exception of the Second Year Essay, and potentially Mathematical Analysis III instead of Analysis III).

Queries should be sent to the Director of Undergraduate Studies as early as possible.
