Registration
Registration means putting your name down to take a module, making it appear on your transcript. The reverse process of removing yourself from a module is called deregistration.
Registering and deregistering for modules is done online on a system called eVision.
Core modules are added automatically to your selection and cannot be amended. You may select optional modules approved for your course of study from the list available to you in eVision. Unless otherwise stated in this handbook, modules which do not appear on this list would be considered Unusual Options. For unusual options, you must complete an unusual options form as well as adding the module to your registration in eVision. See the Unusual Options page for further details.
You have several opportunities to fine-tune your selection of modules in eVision:
Term 1
Module registration opens: 09:00 Wed 1st October 2025
Module registration closes: 17:00 Mon 20th October 2025
Term 2
Module registration opens: 09:00 Mon 5th January 2026
Module registration closes: 17:00 Fri 16th January 2026
There is also a final opportunity to deregister from modules later in Term 2. see Deregistration below.
The selection of modules you submit for approval must meet the regulations set out in the handbook for your course of study. The Taught Programmes Office will check your module registration and contact you if they are unable to approve your selection for any reason.
All students (but especially those whose overall mark was less than 55% in their previous year) are encouraged to discuss their choice of modules with their tutor. Where a low-scoring student submits an ambitious registration, the Department may require further discussion with a view to considering a more manageable programme.
Taking 150 CATS: Starting in 25/26, DUGS will give a final approval of whether a student can take 150 CATS. The decision will be made after you have registered all your modules. The decision will be based on your previous academic performance, your proposed list of modules, and if necessary, your tutor's opinion. If approval is not given, you will be contacted to deregister for some modules.
Deregistration
You may deregister from an optional module from 09:00 Monday 9th February 2026, up to the relevant deadlines:
- Unusual Options: 17:00 Fri 20th February 2026
- Modules examined in April: 17:00 Fri 6th March 2026
- Modules examined in Summer: 17:00 Fri 17th April 2026
The Academic Office will not accept deregistration beyond the deadline except on medical or compassionate grounds approved by the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies (this rule is agreed with other university departments, and we enforce it strictly.)
You may not be allowed to deregister from a module for which you have submitted (or should have submitted) work counting for more than 10% of the credit for that module. This is particularly true for modules from departments other than Maths. As a department, we tend to be more relaxed about this rule and allow deregistration even after a typical 15% of assessed work has been completed.
Pre-registration
Some modules require you to express an interest in taking them in advance, sometimes well before the academic year begins. This process is called pre-registration. In general, pre-registration does not guarantee a place on a module.
Some departments require students to pre-register, or follow similar sign-up processes, to confirm your place on their modules. Notable examples of this are Philosophy Department modules and Warwick Business School modules. Don't miss out on a module you really want to take by not following the right procedures. See the Modules from other departments page for further details.
In our department, we operate a pre-registration system for MA3K7 Problem Solving with Python and MA3L3 Communicating Mathematics. This is because there are limited spaces on these modules due to the interactive way in which they are taught. If you want to take either module you will need to submit a pre-registration form, which opens annually in mid-July.
MA3K7 - Problem Solving with Python
Important Information
- The capacity of this module is strictly limited to 100.
- You must apply to take this module by completing the pre-registration form, but pre-registering does not guarantee you a place on the module.
- In the case that more students pre-register than there are available places, year 3 students on G100 will be given priority and places offered based on order of application.
- The pre-registration form will open in mid July and closes at the end of August. Exact dates are advertised at the end of Term 3.
- You will be contacted by the Taught Programmes Office in early September to confirm if you have been offered a place on the module.
- If you have a place confirmed, you will need to add MA3K7 to your module registration in eVision by the end of week 1 if you intend to take up your place. If you do not add it to your registration by that date we will assume you no longer wish to take the module.
- If you add this module to your registration in eVision without pre-registering and having your place confirmed, it will be removed from your selection.
- After the October deadline, we will allocate any spare places based on order of application during the initial pre-registration period. If all students who applied have been allocated a place, the form will re-open for a second round of applications (details will be provided at that time).
- During term 2 module registration, you will again need to ensure you are registered for MA3K7 in eVision by the end of the first week of term 2 to retain your place.
- After the January deadline, should any places become available we will allocate spare places based on order of application during the initial pre-registration period. If all students who applied have been allocated a place, the form will re-open for a final round of applications (details will be provided at that time).
- Students on G100 who are offered a place but subsequently transfer to G103 may be removed from the module if it becomes full and places were not offered to all G100 students who applied.
- Students on GV17 Maths and Philosophy may apply, but we do not expect to be able to accommodate other joint-degree students on this module.
MA3L3 - Communicating Mathematics
Important Information
- The capacity of this module is strictly limited to 30.
- You must apply to take this module by completing the pre-registration form, but pre-registering does not guarantee you a place on the module.
- In the case that more students pre-register than there are available places, year 3 Maths students will be given priority and places will be offered based in order of application.
- You will be contacted by the Taught Programmes Office in early September to confirm if you have been offered a place on the module.
- If you have a place confirmed, you will need to add MA3L3 to your module registration in eVision by Wed 8thOct 2025 if you intend to take up your place.
- Joint degree students may apply for this module but will only be offered a place if there is space after Maths students have been accommodated.
