Getting to Warwick
By air: The closest airport is Birmingham International (BHX). The airport has a train station, from where there are frequent and fast trains to Coventry. From the London airports, the best plan is to take a train to Coventry.
By rail: The closest large train station is Coventry. From there, you can take either a taxi or a bus to the University of Warwick. Coventry Station was reconfigured in 2022 and there are now exits both to the station forecourt (on the same level as the platforms) and, at a higher level, to Warwick Road. To get a taxi, exit and the ground level to the station forecourt and look for the taxi rank. It is also easy to pick up an Uber there.
By bus: [The NX West Midlands bus strike has ended. A reduced service is expected on Sunday 26 March and a normal service from from Monday 27 March.] To get a bus, exit the station at the higher level to Warwick Road. There is a bus stop just outside the exit where you can get the National Express buses 12X (fast direct bus to the University) and 11 (slower indirect bus to the University).
Getting around
Under normal circumstances, the 12X and 11 buses run from the Bus Interchange on the University of Warwick campus to Coventry Station (alight at "Station Bridge" on Warwick Road), and the 11 bus (in the opposite direction) runs from the Bus Interchange to Kenilworth and Leamington Spa. The Stagecoach U1 bus runs from the Bus Interchange to Leamington Spa (bypassing Kenilworth) and back, maintaining a good service into the evening. The Stagecoach X17 runs from Gibbet Hill crossroad to Kenilworth and Leamington Spa but the service becomes much less frequent as the evening approaches. The last bus from Kenilworth back to the University is scheduled at 20:49.
The WM on Demand shuttle bus serves the area around the University, including Kenilworth. The service can be accessed via an iOS/Android app. See this link for info. (My experience is that the service is erratic. Sometimes a bus is available very quickly, sometimes not at all.)
There is a taxi rank at the Bus Interchange and this is also a convenient point for picking up an Uber.
Eating
As advertised, there will be a dinner on the Monday evening (7pm, Scarman). Based on the high cost and poor service currently provided by Warwick Food and Drink, we are not making other meals available as part of the workshop. In lieu of this, there will be some funding for meals for non-Warwick participants (details to be emailed). There are a number of places to get lunch on campus:
Caffe Nero (Faculty of Arts Building) Coffee, cakes, sandwiches.
Pret A Manger Decent sandwiches, etc.
Cafe Library restaurant and coffee shop The restaurant serves hot food, generally not highly regarded. The coffee shop serves coffee, cake and sandwiches
NAIC Cafe Acceptable hot food. Coffee, cakes and sandwiches. Nice to sit outside. It is the ETDS seminar's usual lunch option.
WBS Cafe Reasonable Asian-style food. Limited seating.
All the above venues are cashless: card or phone payment only.
In the evening, there are on- (or near-)campus options, though better food can be found further afield. Here is a list of some suggestions (the first two only make the list due to the convenience of their locations).
Benugo, Warwick Arts Centre
Varsity, Gibbet Hill Road (edge of campus, not owned by the University of Warwick)
The Indian Edge, 50 Warwick Road, Kenilworth CV8 1HH
The Thai Kitchen, 43 Station Road, Kenilworth CV8 1JD
Tambayan Filipino Kitchen, 5 The Square, Kenilworth CV8 1EF (this is the continuation of the Filipino food formerly available at the Virgins & Castle by other means; very small: be sure to make a reservation in advance; hard to find: take a local)
Pomeroys Bistro and Bar, 48 Station Road, Kenilworth CV8 1JD (a la carte is expensive but they usually offer a fixed price menu which is more reasonable)
The Clarendon Arms, 44 Castle Hill, Kenilworth CV8 1NB (pub and restaurant, close to Kenilworth Castle)
Kayal, 42 Regent Street, Leamington Spa CV32 5EG (South Indian)
