A mathematical journey through literature

When: Wednesday 13 November 2024, 7pm

Where: MS0.02, Zeeman Building, University of Warwick, with a reception in The Street after the event

This November, we'll be joined by Sarah Hart who will make you look at maths with a completely new perspective.

A mathematical journey through literature

This lecture will explore the many connections between mathematics and literature. Sarah will show you the hidden mathematical structures behind everything from poetry to novels, and reveal some of the beautiful mathematical imagery and symbolism in fiction, from simple fairy tales to classics like Moby-Dick. Sarah's goal is to show that not only are mathematics and literature inextricably linked, but that understanding these links can enhance our enjoyment of both.

About the speaker

Sarah Hart is a mathematician and author. She is Professor Emerita of Mathematics at Birkbeck College (University of London), and has recently served a four-year term as Professor of Geometry at Gresham College, the first woman to hold this chair since its creation in 1597. As a hugely popular lecturer with over 20 years teaching experience, she is a regular speaker at international events. Sarah is particularly interested in the cultural, historical and creative impact of mathematics, and the links between mathematics and the arts. Her first book, Once Upon a Prime: The Wondrous Connections Between Mathematics and Literature, published in 2023, was a New York Times Book review Editor’s Choice, and won the Mathematical Association of America’s Euler Book Prize in 2024.
