Guest Speaker: Professor Spencer Kelly “Exploring the Emotional Function of Co-Speech Gesture in Language and Communication”
Professor Spencer Kelly from Colgate University, New York will be joining us for a Virtual Seminar on TEAMS, speaking on:
“Exploring the Emotional Function of Co-Speech Gesture in Language and Communication”
Brief abstract:
Over the past four decades, the scientific study of co-speech hand gestures has heavily focused on their cognitive roles in thinking, speaking and communicating. However, there is a long history of considering the emotional functions of gesture, and in this talk, Prof. Kelly will describe a range of experiments from his lab that explore this issue in language comprehension. He will argue that by bringing emotion back into the study of co-speech gesture, we will have a deeper understanding of the communicative function of the hands in language use.
Please contact Suzanne Aussems if you'd like to talk to Professor Kelly after the talk.
