Join us for the first Guest Speaker Seminar of the Year, in the new 13:00 Friday slot on 11 December (TEAMS links has been circulated, but reminder nearer the time). Our speaker, Professor Krys Kaniasty is joining us live from Pennsylvania.

United and Divided: Resilient, overwhelmed, and antagonistic communities coping with natural and human-induced disasters.

The capacity of a collective to triumph over shared adversities is based on maintaining and augmenting social cohesion, mutual support, cooperation and a sense of belonging to a valued social group and community. Many disasters initially mobilize affected communities into a heroic and altruistic struggle to fulfil immediate needs, and to shield survivors from an overwhelming sense of loss. However, this heroic stage inevitably ceases and may not be sufficient to conquer the slowly evolving deterioration of social relationships routinely experienced by postdisaster communities. The aim of this lecture is to illustrate the significance of community resilience, defined as the ability to deter insidious erosion of interpersonal connections in the aftermath of crises, as a most fundamental way of deterring lasting negative psychological consequences of collective upheavals

Host: Professor Robin Goodwin
