Our department

With over sixty academic staff, Warwick has one of the largest statistics departments in the world, ranking highly every year in the QS subject rankings. Research in the department spans probability, applied statistics and probabilistic AI. In the most recent national research assessment. In the most recent national research assessment REF 2021, the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics rank third nationally among Mathematical Sciences research groups for research power. Information about our full range of research activities and links to research initiatives can be found at our research webpages.

Our department also leads the world in innovative teaching in this subject area. We pioneered the MORSE degree in 1975 and in 2014 were the first university in the UK to offer a Data Science degree.

The long-standing high reputation of the department provides our graduates with excellent prospects for their future career or further study.

Warwick has been recognised for excellence in teaching by achieving the highest rating of Gold in the most recent Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) rankings.

Students in a lecture

Our students

As part of our guidance for new students, our current students have put together some content themselves, including videos about being a student in the department and information about sources of support.

Other videos created by our students include this by a Mathematics and Statistics student about their typical day, a campus tour and advice on revising for university exams.

Students play a very active role in your experience at Warwick Statistics. Many students join the Statistics Society who organise support events and socials. On joining Warwick, you will begin to learn about being a data scientist even if you did not apply for the Data Science degree, so the Data Science Society also proves popular. Some students may be interested in a career as an actuary, in which case the Actuarial Society is for you. You can also get involved by becoming a student ambassador to help out at open days and offer-holder days.

You can chat with, and read blogs by, current students via unibuddy (look for a student studying MORSE, Mathematics and Statistics or Data Science).

Our courses

Warwick Statistics offers degrees in MORSE, Mathematics and Statistics and Data Science. The degrees share the same core of rigorous mathematics, but offer very different opportunities for specialisation. Although administered from Statistics, the content in each degree is delivered by experts from the relevant department. For some detail about each degree, follow links above. For further detail see the latest course handbooks.

All of our degrees are accredited by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS), so graduates will have the opportunity to gain Graduate Statistician (GradStat) status with the RSS. This gives additional value to your degree qualification and access to further professional development opportunities.

Through taking particular choices of modules during the degree you can gain exemptions from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) from a number of actuarial exams.
