Statistics Department: Student Engagement Projects

We have excellent and strong students who are developing skill sets that will make them highly valuable problem-solvers in their chosen career path. We are always looking to evolve our programme to ensure that we are delivering a research-led curriculum but are also strongly driven by the need to ensure students leave with the complete skill set for a modern workplace.

We are seeking to develop closer links with employers to work closely with our students on real-world research problems:

  • This would give students a greater insight to applied research and field specific insights in a career path that matches their intended destination.
  • Employers would get the very positive opportunity to work with our best students who understand the need for data-driven solutions and potentially be a future applicant for your team.

Our three degree programmes MORSE, MathStat, and Data Science give our students a strong combination of quantitative, analytical and computational skills that can be applied across a wide range of industries and roles. Our training gets them to a very strong position but we feel collaborations with external partners is the natural next step in enhancing the programme for our very best students while also giving interested employers access to collaboration with such strong students.

Beyond our highly successful series of themed careers events, please consider engaging with our best students via one of the following two opportunities.

Co-supervise a Dissertation project

Do you have a real-world problem, question or challenge that could benefit from data-driven analysis, mathematical modelling or AI?


Our M-dissertation, i.e. Integrated Masters, projects offer industry partners the opportunity to work with high-achieving students on projects arising directly from real-world industry needs.
Projects can draw on expertise across Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, with the opportunity to collaborate with one or more academics from the Statistics Department.

You bring the challenge. We bring the academic expertise and talented student.

Industry partners are invited to propose a project based on a genuine problem or opportunity within their organisation. We can then work with you to shape the project and identify where academic expertise could add value.

  • Students are selected for their academic achievement, reliability and professionalism, ensuring that industry partners work with motivated and capable individuals.
  • Projects are agreed towards the end of the students' third year (April–June) and are undertaken during their fourth year, from September to April. (Supervision meetings can be arranged to suit the needs and working practices of the partner organisation.)

Offer a Placement Year

Develop emerging talent while gaining a motivated student who can contribute to your organisation.


A placement year is an opportunity to bring a talented student into your organisation for an extended period, giving them the chance to apply their knowledge in a professional environment while making a meaningful contribution to your team.
Our students study across Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, giving them a strong combination of quantitative, analytical and computational skills that can be applied across a wide range of industries and roles.

A placement can be shaped around your organisation's needs — from data analysis and statistical modelling to machine learning, AI, software development, business analytics or research. Students can contribute to ongoing projects while developing the practical and professional skills that prepare them for their future careers.
