Supervision & Support

The Department of Statistics is dedicated to providing excellent support to students during their time with us. Throughout the PhD journey at Warwick, there are a number of different support networks and provisions, including but not limited to those listed on this page.

Postgraduate Support Team

This dedicated professional team provides guidance in navigating the PhD journey and includes the CDT Director, CDT Administrator and Programmes Co-ordinator. The Postgraduate Support Team can be contacted at stats.pg.support@warwick.ac.uk.

Personal Tutor

All students will be allocated a Personal Tutor for the duration of their studies. The role of the Personal Tutor is only pastoral, to act as additional support when necessary.

Academic Advisor

The CDT Director will act as your Academic Advisor at the start of your studies. They will help you navigate and choose modules based on your interests and strengths. They will also advise on any optional training choices and guide you through the process of selecting a project.

Project Supervisor

Once the Project Supervisors are confirmed (around the beginning of Term 2), the Project Supervisor replaces the Academic Advisor. It is expected that the Project Supervisor will be the PhD Supervisor, with the decision confirmed as part of the PhD upgrade process at the end of the first year.

PhD Supervisor

The PhD Supervisor is allocated at the point of the PhD upgrade decision. It is normally expected to be the Project Supervisor.

The supervisor has the fundamental role of being your main collaborator and research partner, offering guidance and support throughout your PhD journey.

Wellbeing Support

Alongside the Postgraduate Support Team, the Department of Statistics also has a dedicated Student Support and Progression Officer providing welfare support to students as required. This position also works alongside the University’s Wellbeing Support Services.

Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC)

The SSLC is made up of elected student representatives, professional support staff and academic staff. They are student-led and provide an area for students and staff to discuss ideas and solve problems concerning teaching, learning and student support.

The SSLC allows students to have a say on their course, their department, and their resources, and is a great way to input into the University. They also provide an opportunity for the department to consult with students and receive feedback on new proposals. Students are elected to the SSLC by their peers, and represent their course and year in the committee.

In addition to the SSLC, there are other departmental committees that PhD students have representation on, including:

  • IT Committee
  • Welfare, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (WEDIC)
  • Research Committee
