Ask a Statistics PhD student

Free peer-to-peer statistical advisory clinics for all Warwick PhD students

PhD students in Statistics are offering advice on statistics related question to all Warwick PhD students. Our expertise covers the whole spectrum of Probability and Statistics, to include (but not limited to):

  • Data collection
  • Data analysis
  • Design of experiments / Survey design
  • Elicitation of expert judgements
  • Time series analysis
  • Bayesian statistics
  • Statistical machine learning
  • Stochastic modelling
  • Spatial statistics
  • Computational statistics

What we offer:

  • One consultation session of 30min available to all Warwick PhD students, on a first-come first-served basis.
  • If additional help is needed, a second consultation session can be booked for an additional 30min, to also cover up to 3h of our preparation time.
  • If the two sessions are not enough, the problem will be referred to one of the academic coordinators of the statistical advisory clinic, who will assess (with input from your PhD supervisor) whether there is scope for further collaboration on the problem, to benefit both sides.

What we expect:

  • Please make sure that your problem is as well formulated as possible.
    • If you have data available that you want to analyse, what does it represent? How has it been collected? What is the question you want to answer using your data?
    • If you want advice prior to data collection, what is the problem you want to answer and how is the data connected to it? What are the practical limitations to data collection?
    • If you have a random process that you want to model, what are the key variables? How do you want to use the model, i.e. what type of questions do you want to answer with it?
  • At completion of the consultation process, you will be asked to send a brief report on time used, outcomes and feedback.

We gratefully acknowledge funding from the SEM Faculty and the Department of Statistics.
