Our 4-dimensional degree

Mathematics & Operational Research & Statistics & Economics

  • three-year BSc MORSE (Hons)
  • four-year integrated masters BSc MMORSE (Hons)

These are Mathematics degree courses which integrate the study of pure mathematics and statistics with their applications to economics, finance and management. These are core skills required in modern business analytics.

The MORSE concept

These courses are unique: no other university in the world offers equivalent programmes. The first MORSE students started in 1975, three years after the idea was launched during the founding year of the Department.

About 200 students start each year with overseas and European students forming about one-third of the intake allowing our students to form lifelong, global friendship networks whilst at Warwick.

The fact that Warwick MORSE and MMORSE are so strongly and widely valued internationally makes our graduates highly employable worldwide.

Admissions

Application should be made to either MORSE (GLN0) or MMORSE (G0L0) but not both. Transfers between these two courses is straightforward during the first two years at university (details under Course structure).

Transfers between all our courses - DatSci, MDatSci, MathStat, MMathStat, MORSE and MMORSE - are usually straightforward for offer-holders and even beyond; see FAQs for more details. We therefore recommend to apply to just one of our courses.

Overseas students need to make changes to their visa when changing their course, even within the same department - see International Student Immigration Service. Similar considerations may become relevant for EU students in the future.

For more information see under Admissions on our Undergraduate pages.

Course structure

The curriculum is build on the principle that module choices get more and more flexible as you progress through the degree. On top of that, you may choose to 'overload' and study additional options from an even wider range or modules (e.g. foreign languages).

Year 1

The compulsory modules in year 1 concentrate on the underlying mathematical ideas. You also study basic material from economics and Operational Research.

Year 2

In year 2 the statistics, economics and Operational Research are developed further, and there is a wide range of optional modules. At the end of year 2, you finalise your choice between the 3-year MORSE degree and the 4-year MMORSE (the latter requiring you averaged at least 60%).

Final years

MORSE: The third (final) year of MORSE has no compulsory modules, so you can specialise in your chosen area(s).

MMORSE: The third year of MMORSE includes compulsory modules on advanced probability, statistical modelling, and financial mathematics. The fourth (final) year of MMORSE offers many modules in probability, statistics, economics, operational research and financial mathematics, and you also choose a masters-level dissertation topic from one of these areas.

More information about optional modules and other curriculum details can be found in the course handbook for MORSE.

MORSE or MMORSE?

These two degree courses are nearly the same during the first two years making it easy to reconsider your preference during your first two years at university.

Differences become apparent in the final years with a supervised research project and specialisations in MMORSE.

More information about optional modules and other curriculum details can be found in the course handbook for MORSE.

Important information: We are undertaking a review of the curriculum for our MORSE degrees for 2022 entry to ensure that the programme remains at the forefront of recent developments in these important disciplines. Our core and optional modules are currently undergoing approval through the University's rigorous academic processes. As changes are confirmed, we will update the course information on this webpage. It is therefore very important that you check this website again for the latest information before you apply and prior to accepting an offer.
