Introduction

Welcome to Management for Business Excellence (MBE). You have enrolled on an innovative degree course that you will find not only challenging but also very rewarding as it will extend the way that you think about business management and problems. It has been designed to deliver a detailed understanding of the philosophies, strategies, processes and techniques that enable and deliver business excellence in technology-based organizations. You will develop key management and technology skills including leadership, customer-focused product and process development, asset and resource management and 6-sigma to enable you to drive excellence across a business.

An important feature of this degree is that you will be encouraged to make choices on what you learn. The framework for the degree is the European Excellence Model which was created in 1988 and updated regularly since then. Its purpose was and still is to help organizations develop towards achievement of sustainable excellence. The modules that you will study will guide you to develop your understanding of this framework. However, we realised that it would be impossible to cover all aspects of this framework to the greatest depth; many of the modules that you study could be the subject of a dedicated masters degree. Therefore, we have identified a set of core learning objectives for each module and, recognizing that each of you has different interests and aspirations for your future career, you will be encouraged to spend time on your particular learning objectives.

Learning environment

Emphasis in this programme is placed on helping you to learn more effectively and the philosophy of Carl Rogers is embraced in creating a learning environment that encourages you to learn.
