Martin Cortazzi was an invited panel member to contribute an online presentation on 'International researchers share their findings on the PhD the viva'

The panel, 'International researchers share their findings on the PhD the viva' for South African universities, and organised to ensure quality postgraduate experience and to help establish PhD vivas where this is not yet compulsory. Among over 100 attending were two university vice-chancellors, the National Coordinator of quality assurance, senior professors, doctoral supervisors and candidates. Martin Cortazzi with Lixian Jin also gave a plenary conference presentation on 'Applied linguistic perspectives on developing intercultural communication' at the Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai, Oct. 31st- Nov. 1st Finally, Martin Cortazzi with Lixian Jin gave an invited presentation on 'Planetization through intercultural Communication' for the 23rd Conference on International Exchange and Professionals, attended by 1,200 participants from 70 countries, on November 2nd - 3rd in Shanghai, China,

Congratulations to Xi Li, who passed her PhD viva (online) with flying colours!

Xi's thesis was titled ‘A history of English Education in Missionary Institutions in Late 19th and Early 20th Century China’. Xi Li’s external examiner was Prof. Bob Adamson (University of Nottingham Ningbo), author of China’s English: A History of English in Chinese Education. Prof. Neil Murray was the internal examiner and Dr Jason Anderson acted as viva adviser. Xi Li’s supervisor, Prof. Richard Smith, has now guided 25 doctoral students to successful completion of a thesis as main or 50:50 supervisor!

Applied Linguistics welcome a small group of MA TESOL students from Uzbekistan

In Applied Linguistics have welcomed a small group of MA TESOL students who joined the 2025/26 cohort. These students are from Uzbekistan and they are being sponsored by the El Yurt Umidi funding body. Applied Linguistics have established a relationship with this sponsor and we look forward to welcoming more students (both PGT and PGR) from Uzbekistan. Thank you to colleagues who have worked hard to secure this opportunity for Applied Linguistics and SELCS.
