Primary & Early Years Offers
Our programme
The Primary & Early Years PGCE programme is a full-time course, during which trainees undertake placements in three separate key stages:
Early Years trainees are placed in Key Stage 1, Nursery and Reception (in this order).
Primary trainees are placed in Key Stage 1, Lower KS2 and Upper KS2 during the year.
Key information
From 2024/25, the ITT criteria requires PGCE trainees to teach 80% of the timetable for six weeks of their summer placement. Therefore, we are planning for trainees’ experience in the spring and summer terms to be in the same school but in two different age phases (either side of the Enhanced placements week) to provide continuous mentoring for the same trainee throughout both terms.
If school capacity and/or phase provision does not allow you to offer across two different age phases, we will also consider offers for a placement in one or other term.
Making offers
Please see the information below, noting:
For the Autumn term placement:
Trainees will spend days at the University each week. The first placement is designed to provide opportunities to observe teaching and learning and to undertake specific tasks which link theory to school practice, including Intensive Training & Practice (ITAP) foci, with a view to building up teaching just before and then after half term.
Early Years trainees are placed in Key Stage 1
Primary trainees are placed in Key Stage 1, Lower KS2 or Upper KS2

*Enhanced placements
provide experiences for trainees before and after the age phase in which they are training and in SEND settings. Some of these enhanced placements may take place in their placement school.
**Please note: Placement offers may be accepted at the discretion of the University in line with student demand.
Funding paid to partnership schools is a contribution towards classroom-based training, mentor/trainee meetings, and attendance at the University’s mentor development sessions.
The funding for each Professional Placement has been determined at the below rates and will be paid upon completion*:
| Age Phase 1 (Autumn) |
£600 per trainee |
|
|
| Age Phase 2 (Spring) |
£400 per trainee |
Age Phases 2 & 3 |

*Payments due to the partner school will be reduced by £45.00 per full week that the trainee is not present on placement. A change in the school’s Ofsted grading may impact on the University’s ability to place students at the Partner School, in line with Ofsted guidance
