Identify Principles

What is the purpose of mentoring?

Hover your cursor over the image below and click on the play button that appears to hear a brief introduction (approximately 50 seconds long) to mentoring. If you require a transcript of this video, one is available here.

The key principles of mentoring are to:

  • Foster development
  • Encourage
  • Believe in the other person
  • Create a space for learning
  • Guide
  • Increase awareness
  • Identify alternatives
  • Initiate action
  • Focus on learning

Examine these principles of mentoring and coaching. They are an abridged version of the Curee Coaching and Mentoring Framework.

Now consider planning and discussing three strategies or actions with your mentoring colleagues that you might want to put in place to meet the framework.
