Warwick Training Schools

More information

For trainees, time spent in a Warwick Training School (whether an as employee or on placement) is an opportunity to develop and improve pedagogy, professionally supported by in-school mentors. For schools, hosting trainees is an opportunity to focus on instructional leadership; a chance to reflect on and improve, what goes on in classrooms – for trainers and trainees.

Becoming a Warwick Training School in an international setting involves a willingness to accept Warwick PGCEi and PGCE iQTS students on placement, or an agreement to support your own staff on their Warwick PGCEi or iQTS journey.

Becoming a Warwick Teaching School

Warwick Training Schools commit to

  • Providing a 90-day (for PGCEi) or 120 day (PGCE with iQTS) teaching placement.
  • Qualified mentor support for the full duration of the placement period, with that mentor required to conduct a minimum of formal lesson observations (including a combined Link Tutor observation undertaken with a University representative)
  • Offering the trainee access to all aspects of school life: report-writing, supervision duties, exam invigilation, attendance on trips/expeditions, the opportunity to support/run co-curricular activities, parent-teacher consultations and so forth.
  • Involving trainees, as appropriate, in any professional development opportunities available in the school.
  • When hosting multiple trainees, provision of time and facilities for trainees to meet regularly with each other to discuss teaching and learning, their professional challenges and to share experiences.
  • Where possible, sessions with Senior Managers (and the school Principal) to discuss trainees’ progress on the programme and aspects of teaching as a career considered useful to the trainees.
  • Providing in-school Mentors with time to undertake their role, alongside supporting their commitment to completing Warwick’s online Mentor training.

Warwick Training Schools benefit from

  • An opportunity to become a recognised centre for teacher development.
  • Association and affiliation with The University of Warwick that permits the use of the University’s logo.
  • Access to Warwick-standard trainees as a potential source of teacher recruitment.
  • University certified mentor training
  • Excellent professional development for Training School staff with involvement in professional networks through partnership and the Research in Action Conference and online sessions hosted by the University of Warwick.
  • Supported application process through the University of Warwick admissions system for your school employees.

Appreciative that not all trainees will be suitable for all contexts, Training Schools set their own prerequisites for accepting a trainee. The University would formally introduce eligible applicants to your school(s) for your consideration. The final decision as to whether a student is suitable, and any formal offer of a placement and/or employment, is between the school and the trainee
