9: Work Placements
Economics and Management students are the only students within the Department of Economics who have the opportunity to undertake a work placement as part of their degree.
Placement Year Requirements:
- A Placement Year can only be completed in Year 3 of this course, and students must return for a final year of study (Year 4) following the Placement Year;
- Maximum 1 placement permitted per year;
- Minimum placement duration of 9 months to meet the requirement of your Placement Year
- Placement must be relevant to your degree (i.e. business, management, economics), and approved by the Year Away academic lead in Warwick Business School;
- Be full-time standard working hours of the destination country AND must meet minimum 35 hours per week;
- Students completing a Placement Year will take the core required IB2PY Year Away in Context (120 CATS).
Work Placement Restrictions
- We cannot permit part-time work placements;
- You cannot work for a family business or a company connected to your family network;
- We are not able to permit students to freelance, work for their own company or start their own business as a recognised Placement Year;
- While it is possible for students to source placements in start-up companies, these should be sufficiently established and have an appropriate infrastructure in place. Placements at very early-stage start-up companies may not be permitted and will be considered on a case-by-case basis;
- It is expected that placements will be conducted either in-person or on a hybrid basis. Fully remote or virtual placements will not be permitted (unless approved on an exceptional basis as a result of unforeseen global disruption);
- Ideally placements should be paid and unpaid placements are discouraged. Unpaid placements will be considered on a case-by-case basis as we do recognise unpaid is common practice in specific industries and countries, and WBS doesn't wish to restrict opportunities. Pay particular attention to your budget planning if you are not receiving a salary or compensation;
- You are solely responsible for sourcing your work placement and arranging all practicalities, such as organisation of appropriate immigration permission, housing and health insurance. WBS does not match students directly with work placement opportunities. Although finding a work placement is your responsibility, there is careers guidance available from the University and WBS to offer help and advice at all stages of your student journey.
Upon successful completion and passing of the IB2PY module, the degree title will be updated to BSc Economics and Management with Placement Year.
