We are thrilled to announce that Warwick Law School has achieved high levels of student satisfaction, as reported in the latest Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) 2024.

The PTES is an annual national survey of postgraduate taught students, conducted this year from 15 April – 13 June 2024. The survey gathered students' opinions on various aspects of their courses, including teaching and learning, engagement, skills development and other aspects of their experience. The Law School’s response rate this year was 39.4%.

We have been delighted to see significant improvements in students’ overall satisfaction, which has risen by 13 percentage points since 2023, to 90%.

Highlights of this year’s results include:

  • Teaching and Learning: 97% of students agreed that staff are good at explaining things and 92% agreed the course has enhanced their academic abilities.
  • Organisation and Management: 95% of students agreed that changes in the course or teaching were communicated effectively and 92% agreed that their course was well organised and ran smoothly.
  • Skills Development: 92% of students agreed that their research skills had developed during their course and 89% agreed that their ability to communicate information effectively to diverse audiences had also developed during their course.
  • Support: 92% of students agreed that the support for academic skills met their needs and 87% agreed the support for using IT and accessing resources met their needs.

Last year’s PTES results highlighted a need for us to create a greater sense of engagement with our postgraduate community and improve assessment and feedback in the School. We are pleased to see significant progress being made in these areas:

  • Engagement: 97% of students agreed they were encouraged to ask questions or make contributions in taught sessions (increased by 9 percentage points since 2023) and 92% agreed they had appropriate opportunities to give feedback on their experience (increased by 11 percentage points since 2023).
  • Community: 74% of students agreed they felt part of a community of postgraduate students (increased by 14 percentage points since 2023) and 66% of student agreed there are sufficient opportunities to interact with other postgraduate taught students (increased by 22 percentage points since 2023)
  • Assessment and Feedback: 87% of students agreed that feedback on their work has been useful (increased by 6 percentage points since 2023) with 82% of students agreeing that feedback on their work was prompt (increased by 12 percentage points since 2023).

Whilst we are pleased with the progress made, we recognise there is still room for improvement. We look forward to working with students over the next academic year to further enhance the sense of community in the Law School and strengthen assessment and feedback processes.

In response to these initial results, Head of School, Professor Andrew Williams has said:

“This is a fabulous achievement that reflects considerable work over the year to make our PG taught programmes as fulfilling and effective as possible. It is also a testament to the close learning environment created by staff and students in partnership.”

Dr Kathryn McMahon, Director of Postgraduate Taught Studies commented:

"This is a fabulous result which is a credit to the academic colleagues on the PGT programme, who together with our students, and well-being services, have worked to provide an excellent teaching, learning and supportive environment. To our professional services colleagues who have worked hard to streamline and improve the administrative processes. Special thanks to our student experience team who have worked tirelessly over the year to develop innovative ways to foster a vibrant learning community."

Dr Rebecca Munro, Director of Student Experience added:

"The PTES results are a testament to the dedication of our amazing academic and professional services staff who continuously strive to enhance the PGT teaching and learning environment. They also highlight the hard efforts of our Student Engagement and Experience Officers in cultivating a PGT community environment. Looking ahead, the Student Experience Team will use this valuable feedback to work towards improving the student experience even further."

Benchmarking data will be available later in the summer of 2024, allowing us to compare our scores against other Russell Group universities in the UK. These initial results are promising and highlight the Law School's dedication to improving the student experience by closely collaborating with students to hear their voices and enhance their educational journey.
