WLS students help Warwickshire Law Society relaunch its Junior Lawyers Division

The Warwickshire Junior Lawyers Division is a recently re-launched community for junior lawyers across Warwickshire ranging from students (undergraduate, LPC/SQE, BPTC, GDL and CILEx), paralegals, trainees, pupil barristers, solicitors, barristers and legal executives up to five years’ PQE.

LLB student Jaskiran Sandhu is Vice Chair of the WJLD. She is currently on a placement year with Wright Hassall LLP and will return to complete the final year of her studies in October this year. She told us a little more about the launch event, what the WJLD has to offer, and why WLS students should consider joining whilst membership fees are waived.

What is the WJLD all about?

We at the WJLD believe that junior lawyers often require the most support with their personal and professional development in the profession but often lack the network or community and require training which up-levels and up-skills them. We are a community that recognises this and that is catered to supporting the next generation of lawyers and changemakers in the region. We offer:

✅ News & updates on the legal profession
✅ Networking opportunities with peers & senior lawyers
✅ Events, CPD sessions & career development support
✅ Local opportunities to engage with the legal community

We have a unique and exciting range of networking events, training sessions and career development support lined up for the year and are eager to support as many junior lawyers in the region as possible. So, make sure to head over to our LinkedIn, website or Instagram page and become a member!

The Launch Event

The WJLD Committee were excited to present our Launch Event on 20 March 2025 at East Chase Distillers in Kenilworth. It was a fantastic event with great food, company, and conversations with so many of our members. We’re proud to have built a community of 140 members and growing, only a few months after relaunching the Division.

The event also saw our Main Sponsor, On Point Data, introduce themselves to our members and our partners, the Law Training Centre, present a valuable opportunity to apply for a SQE Scholarship with them.

The Launch Event represents just the beginning for the WJLD, and we are excited to organise many more networking, social and training events for all our members throughout the year.

Maddie Francis, a first year student on the Warwick Law School LLB degree is Welfare Officer for the WJLD. She told us why she chose to join and why others should too.

"The Warwick Junior Lawyers Division is a great community of young aspiring lawyers who want to understand more about the field and those within it. It is a space for people in the same (or similar) boat as you. I joined in the hope of meeting others like me. I see it as a place to nurture a passion for the career, learn more and make connections that will last."

"After learning about it I was quick to jump at the opportunity to attend any event they hosted, and when I learnt they were creating a committee I knew I wanted to help in some way. After learning of the roles I knew that Welfare was for me. I want to help others, which is a very challenging career and degree. I am delighted to have been appointed to the role. As the Welfare Officer I hope to host wellbeing and mental health events, such as stress management, but also very relaxed socials and mixers that get people out of the office (or library) and take a break."

"I would love to see more students at Warwick join the division, as I think it is a great opportunity to have early insight into the legal profession."

A number of our current students attended the launch, some of whom have become members. We asked them what they thought of the event…

Gvantsa Ichkiti, LLM in International Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation

“Attending the WJLD launch was a really inspiring experience. It was great to see so many motivated students and early-career professionals in one place, all eager to connect and grow together. The event had a welcoming atmosphere and highlighted how committed the WJLD is to supporting junior lawyers in our region. It was also encouraging to see the opportunities for collaboration and professional development that WJLD is creating for its members.”

“I joined the WJLD because I wanted to be part of a wider network of aspiring and junior lawyers beyond university. It offers valuable opportunities to build connections, learn from others in the profession, and get involved in events that support personal and professional development. Being part of WJLD feels like a step closer to the legal world, and I’m looking forward to everything the division has planned.”

Christeena Anna Reji, LLM in Advanced Legal Studies

“The WJLD launch was an incredible experience and my first legal social event! The atmosphere was so welcoming, and it was amazing to connect with legal professionals and peers. The event offered fantastic networking and career insights."

"WJLD is a great platform for building connections and gaining industry exposure. I highly recommend joining and attending future events to make the most of this incredible community!”

Suhani Rajan, 1st year LLB

“The launch event was an incredible opportunity to network with legal professionals from across Coventry, Birmingham, Warwickshire, Leamington, and beyond. I gained valuable insights into WJLD’s partnership with On-Point Data and the various scholarship opportunities available.”

“What really stood out to me was the chance to connect with lawyers at a similar stage in their careers. While I was the youngest there as a first-year, I had insightful conversations with third years, paralegals, and legal assistants who had just entered the legal field. We often hear about the lives of trainees and partners, but it’s rare to get such an honest perspective on the day-to-day challenges faced by those still trying to ‘make it’ in the profession.”

“It was also inspiring to engage with senior professionals who offered valuable guidance and advice on career opportunities and scholarships. While Warwick is known for its strong academic focus, this society provides a fantastic opportunity to supplement that academic foundation with practical insights and professional connections.”
