Over 100 attendees participated in the Warwick Law School Public Lecture at USIU-Africa
Warwick Law School, in collaboration with United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa), hosted a successful public lecture last month in Nairobi, Kenya, that attracted over 100 students, academics, and legal professionals. The event provided a platform for insightful discussions on pressing legal and social issues, reinforcing Warwick’s commitment to global engagement and academic collaboration.
The public lecture featured distinguished speakers from Warwick Law School:
- Dr. Jeremmy Okonjo, Assistant Professor of Law, delivered a thought-provoking talk on "Law and Technology: Challenges for Global South Development in the Digital Age."
- Prof. Ann Stewart, Professor of Law, explored "Older People or Older Women and Men? Reflections on Gender & Ageism."
- Caroline Rushingwa, International Liaison Lead, Africa, and Africa Chair, BUILA, presented on "Study Opportunities at the University of Warwick," highlighting the university’s commitment to supporting African students in higher education.
Warwick Law School's Professor Ann Stewart shared:
“It was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to meet so many staff and students at USIU and to share my research on older women and men's rights in Africa and the challenges that ageing presents for policy makers. USIU offered us a wonderfully vibrant academic environment!”
Speaking on the success of the event, Caroline Rushingwa emphasised the importance of international collaborations in higher education:
“This event showcased the power public engagement and academic collaborations in bridging knowledge across borders. Engaging with the USIU-Africa community reinforced Warwick’s commitment to fostering meaningful discussions on legal and global challenges. We are also excited to welcome USIU students who are exploring studying in the UK at the Master’s or PhD level. Those interested in learning more about opportunities at Warwick can reach out to us at africa@warwick.ac.uk."
A special acknowledgment was given to Terry Odhiambo, a Warwick PhD student, for her instrumental role in organising the lecture, demonstrating Warwick University’s dedication to empowering its student community to lead and foster international academic networks.
The public lecture was held on Thursday, March 27, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:40 PM at LT 7, SHSS, USIU-Africa, with both in-person and virtual attendance options.
This event marks another step in Warwick Law School’s commitment to engaging with the East African legal and academic community, paving the way for future collaborations and opportunities for students and scholars.
