Dr Ming-Sung Kuo awarded Prize of Scholarly Excellence

Warwick Law School’s Dr Ming-Sung Kuo was awarded the 2025 Prize of Scholarly Excellence in Constitutional Studies by the Constitutional Studies Program at the University of Texas at Austin last month.

He told us: “I am truly honoured and humbled by receiving the award. Nothing I have done is of scholarly excellence. I just did my bit as a student who has tried to make sense of the constitutional phenomenon.”

Dr Kuo was attending the 2025 Global Summit on Constitutionalism, from the 20-22 March this year. Organized by the Constitutional Studies Program at The University of Texas at Austin, the Global Summit on Constitutionalism is a biannual scholarly conference on constitutional developments in the world. In its third edition this year, the focus of the Summit was on the contemporary challenges facing constitutionalism.

The award was presented on 22 March by Professor Richard Albert, Director of the Constitutional Studies Program at The University of Texas at Austin. During the award ceremony, Dr Kuo was celebrated for his exceptional contributions to constitutional studies, particularly for his work addressing critical contemporary societal challenges. He was praised as a leading global constitutional scholar for his research on classical concepts and ideas in constitutional theory and comparative constitutional law, offering novel interpretations that fundamentally innovate the field. His work on topics such as democracy, populism, emergency powers, and more has been particularly groundbreaking. The laudation highlighted the breadth and depth of his scholarship, notably his influential article ‘Against Instantaneous Democracy’, which won the 2020 I·CON Best Paper Prize, as well as his work on judicial remedies, which has been approving cited by the Supreme Court of Canada.
