Gender and ageing in African contexts workshop

Warwick Law School in partnership with HelpAge International (Africa region) and the University of Nairobi, School of Law held a two day workshop on Gender and ageing in African contexts: policy, legal and institutional development in Nairobi, Kenya from 4 – 5 June 2019.

The workshop brought together 45 key stakeholders from Kenya, Ethiopia and Malawi to participate in focused discussions and to establish whether there is interest in collaborating on the development of a policy oriented research agenda at national and African regional levels to address these issues. The participants included policy makers, academics, civil society organizations and older people’s champions.

It was funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund ‘Accelerator Grant’ from Warwick University to consider issues relating to gender, ageing and the provision of care for older persons.

Workshop attendee Mr Lefhoko Kesamang, Senior Social Affairs Officer from the Department of Social Affairs, African Union Commission shared, “I chose to come here rather than go on a delegation to another country because it was so very important – the workshop addresses my agenda.” Another participant from a civil society organisation commented, “the workshop helped me to be sensitized and encouraged to work and advocate in older peoples’ rights within my organisation’s mandate and strategic objectives.”
