I studied Law at Birkbeck, University of London, and earned my PhD there with a thesis on the history of asylum, refugee law and sanctuary movements. Since then I have published widely on these and related themes.

In relation to climate refugees in recent years I have worked closely with various international organisations such as the International Organisation for Migration, and the Platform for Disaster Displacement. In the past I also ran a joint project with the British Red Cross educating young people on aspects of refugee law and the refugee experience.

Prior to joining Warwick I taught at Birkbeck, University of East Anglia and Royal Holloway. For a number of years I was also a Visiting Lecturer at LUISS in Rome.
