Closing the Feedback Loop: Critically Engaging with Student Feedback to Enhance Module Design and Teaching Practice

Session theme: Closing the Feedback Loop: Critically Engaging with Student Feedback to Enhance Module Design and Teaching Practice

Dr Maggie O'Brien (Warwick Law School)

Seminar Outline:

Student feedback collected through the National Student Survey (NSS), plays a critical role in shaping our academic reputation and informing Law School priorities. While School-level data receive considerable scrutiny each summer, the most meaningful improvements often arise through sustained engagement with feedback at the module and individual teaching level.

This seminar takes a critical and practical approach to student feedback. We will explore how module and individual feedback can be collected, interpreted, and applied to enhance module design, deepen student engagement, and strengthen teaching practice. Drawing on academic literature and cyclical models of engagement, we will examine feedback not only as evaluative data but also as a reflective and pedagogical tool.

Using concrete examples from the core module LA128, we will consider effective approaches to analysing and actioning feedback and reflect on the emotional and professional dimensions of receiving it. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences of receiving feedback, good or bad, at either a Module or personal level, and consider how these experiences might inform Module or individual development.

For Module Leaders

We will discuss how feedback can be used to critically examine the strengths and weaknesses of module structures and to make targeted changes that enhance the student experience. The session will also offer practical suggestions for managing feedback within larger teaching teams, supporting colleagues, and embedding student voice within module development cycles.

For Individual Teachers

We will share experiences of receiving student feedback and reflect on its emotional impact. Participants will explore constructive ways of engaging with candid or challenging comments and consider how a reflective, critical approach to feedback can inspire creativity, improve teaching practice, and enhance professional growth.
