Choosing your Modules

From the Law School Postgraduate Welcome Pages you will have access to our module taster videos. Even if you have a good idea of which modules you would wish to select, we encourage you to watch as many of the relevant videos as possible before finalising your module choices. The module taster videos will give you a good sense of the overall content, teaching style and presentation of modules.

Please make your module choices for both term 1 and 2 using the Module Pre-registration form by 6pm BST on Wednesday 25 September 2024.

Changes to term 2 modules will only be considered by the Programme Director in exceptional circumstances.

Full-Time Students

If you are a full-time student, you will take three taught modules in Term 1 (including a core module for some courses) and three taught modules in Term 2, as well as your Dissertation Module.

IDLHR and ALS please select 3 optional modules in term 1, and 3 optional modules in term 2.
ICL, IEL and ICGFR please select 2 optional modules in term 1, and 3 optional modules in term 2.

With the exception of LA951 Theory and Practice of International Development Law and Human Rights, it is possible for you to choose a core module of another course as an optional module provided there are spaces available. Priority will be given to the students for whom the module is compulsory.

Compulsory (Core) Modules

Advanced Legal Studies: you do not have a core taught module. Your only compulsory module is LA984 (the dissertation module).

International Development Law and Human Rights: your core module is LA951: Theory and Practice of International Development Law and Human Rights (term 1 and 2), which you will take in addition to 3 taught optional modules per term. We also expect all IDLHR students to attend LA984: Dissertation, Research and Writing module. You will be added to the Tabula group for this module so it will show up on your timetable, but you will not be formally registered for the summative assessment on this module as your dissertation will be submitted through the LA951 module.

International Commercial Law: your core module is LA9FN: Foundations of International Commercial Law (term 1)

International Economic Law: your core module is LA908: International Economic Law (term 1)

International Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation: your core module is LA9A3: International Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation (term 1)

External Modules

You are able to take up to 40 CATS of external modules run by other departments in the University (except for ICL students who can take 1 x 20 CATS module). They must be at postgraduate level and each module must be 20 CATs.
See the university module catalogue to view all modules available across the university. Note that not every module will run in every year, and you will need to check the department website for information about if the module is running, and which term(s) it is available.
Check that you meet any requirements for the module, e.g. Maths, prerequisite modules, modules limited to specific courses.
Check the department website to see if they require pre-registration for modules. Departments such as English, WBS, History and IATL all require pre-registration. You will need to pre-register for your module with these departments as well
If you wish to select a module with an external department you will need to first seek agreement from your Programme Director and permission from the Department concerned. You will need to follow their guidance to apply for a place on a non-Law module.
Please also keep the Law School Student Services Team informed (postgraduate.law@warwick.ac.uk) so they can ensure that you are registered for the correct modules, and also include Law optional modules on your module pre-registration form, incase you are unable to take the external modules.

If you are taking external modules, it is your responsibility to find out when the module/s are running and to ensure that you do not have any clashes with your Law School modules. It is not possible to alter departmental timetables.

PO9E6 Cyber-Security: War, Spies, Crime and Protest on the Internet– Wednesday 11am-1pm term 2 (NB this will clash with LA9FD Industrial Policy, Innovation and Law; and the core IDLHR module LA951)
SO9E5 Feminist Theories and Epistemologies: Debates and Dilemmas– Tuesday 12-2pm term 2 (NB this will clash with LA9FC Corporate Tax Law)
SO929 Gender Analysis & Development Practice– Friday 3-5pm term 2 (NB this will clash with LA9A8 Business and Financial Distress in a Global Context)

Please indicate SO9E5 and SO929 on the Law School module choice form, the Law School will liaise with Sociology on your behalf. For PO9C7 and PO9E6 please complete this form and return to Politics.

Part-Time Students

You must take a total of 120 CATS of taught modules. Your dissertation module is worth 60 CATS.

If you are studying IDLHR or ALS part-time Year 1, please select two optional modules in Term 1 and two options in Term 2.

If you are studying ICL, IEL or ICGFR part-time Year 1, please select one optional module in Term 1 and two options in Term 2

If you are studying any course part-time Year 2, please choose your remaining optional modules (one module in term 1, and 1 module in term 2). You will also be registered for your Dissertation Module in Year 2 of your studies but you will find it very helpful to attend the taught classes in your first year as they will be helping to develop your research and essay writing skills.
