Date: 12 May 2015
Time: 2-4pm
Venue: S0.17 (Social Sciences Building)
Summary:
Dr. Lee Jones, Queen Mary University of London
Dr. Jones’ presentation will explore how to be critical about ASEAN, moving beyond narratives of being an ‘ASEAN basher’ or an ‘ASEAN booster’ his presentation will explore how to use theoretical tools to move towards a greater understanding of the causes of social power relations. This type of approach, which can be seen as incorporating Marx’s approach to ‘grasping for the root’, offers a clear means to develop, deepen, and extend a useful critique of ASEAN in 2015.
Dr Kelly Gerard, University of Western Australia
Dr Gerard’s presentation will explore some specific examples that can be developed by adopting a critical approach. Taking Dr Jones’ approach into the hard realities of being critical about ASEAN, her presentation will explore examples including ASEAN’s commitment to consulting civil society groups in policymaking and its ambitions to create a regional human rights mechanism.
After the presentations there will be time for Q&A with both speakers.
Tea and coffee will be available before the presentations.
