SEMINAR SERIES: Paul Ingram, "The Global Politics of Nuclear Weapons: all mouth and no trousers"
Seminar series: Politics and International Studies in Practice
Paul Ingram is Executive Director of BASIC, the British American Security Information Council based in London and Washington, working with officials, analysts and journalists to find ways around the obstacles to global nuclear disarmament. BASIC works in the US, UK, across NATO and the Middle East behind the scenes and in the media. Paul is also a talk show host of state Iranian TV, with a weekly peak-time programme broadcast live covering issues of strategic importance.
In this seminar, Paul would look at how decisions over nuclear weapons are dominated by people who grew up in the Cold War, with over-simplistic deterrence doctrines that today are downright dangerous. Fearful of the uncertainty the future brings, they cling onto the weapons they used in the past to attempt to control and dominate. It’s time to climb out of the trap, but traditional arms control is not our salvation… it’s part of the problem, with Russia, with Iran, and with North Korea. The solution may lie far closer to home, and if so, we all in the UK face a historic opportunity we must make the most of.
This seminar is scheduled for 4 to 5.30 pm in room S0.18 with tea beforehand from 3.30.
