The Global Economic Crisis and the Political Economy of British Social Democracy: The End of New Labour?

On Friday March 11th 2011, the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick, in association with the Economic and Social Research Council, will be hosting a one day workshop entitled:

‘The Global Economic Crisis and the Political Economy of British Social Democracy: The End of New Labour?’

The workshop will discuss highly topical issues in British politics following the failure of New Labour’s political economy to insulate Britain from the consequences of the global economic crisis that began in 2007, the defeat of the Labour party at the general election in May 2010, and the election of Ed Miliband to the leadership of the Labour party in September 2010.

The workshop will address diverse issues, including:

  • The adequacy of the economic policy framework established by New Labour and the ideas that underscored it.
  • The extent to which New Labour’s political economy subordinated social democrat icgoals to international financial market credibility
  • The implications of the global economic crisis and the May 2010 general election defeat for New Labour’s political economy as it was established in the period 1997-2010
  • The possibilities for social democratic reform in Britain and beyond following the global economic crisis
  • The prospects for the delivery of social democratic reform by the Labour party under the leadership of Ed Miliband
