Professor Matthew Paterson on "The End of Fossil Fuels: Narrative and Power in the Politics of Climate Change"

- Export as iCalendar
Location: R0.12, Ramphal

You are invited to attend a presentation by Professor Matthew Paterson (Manchester University) on: The End of Fossil Fuels: Narrative and Power in the Politics of Climate Change. It will take place on Thursday, 30th November, from 4-5:30pm in R0.12 (Ramphal Building).

Matthew has focused on the political economy of climate change for most of his career. This has involved looking at UN climate negotiations, the roles of specific industries (the fossil fuel industry and the insurance companies, notably), the emergence of carbon markets as a key response to climate change, and the development of climate governance initiatives by a range of actors beyond the interstate system. He is extremely widely published on these issues. Currently he is working on a project entitled the 'Cultural Politics of Climate Change', focused on the ways that attempts to decarbonise the global economy challenge deeply embedded daily practices and the norms and affective desires associated with them. In 2010 he was selected as a Lead Author for the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for the chapter on 'International Cooperation: agreements and instruments' in the Fifth Assessment Report of the Panel, published in 2014.
