Europe in Question Round Table: The Future(s) of the European Union

- Export as iCalendar
Location: Oculus Building, OC0.04

The European Union is experiencing considerable debate about its possible future(s) in the light of domestic political change, the likelihood of ‘Brexit’, the challenge of ‘Trumpism’ and ‘Putinism’, and continuing turbulence in the broader regional and global arenas. This round table event is designed to explore a range of potential futures for the EU in key areas of policy, along with their implications both for the EU and its member states and for the future of regional and world order.

During the past two years, there has been a number of proposals for the future integration or patterns of cooperation in the EU, put forward for example by the German Chancellor Angel Merkel, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the new President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and (in a rather different fashion) by advocates of Britain’s departure from the Union or leaders of populist parties in a number of EU member states. Each of these visions entails a view about the current problems of European integration, the role of the Union in the wider world, and the ways in which it might contribute to the development of regional and world order. Each in turn implies assumptions about the roles of the ‘Brussels institutions’, of EU member states and of actors in the global arena.

In this round table, we focus on both the overall discussion about the EU’s future(s) and a number of key policy areas – specifically, institutional reform, foreign and security policy, and the environment. Speakers will present a range of views and assess a number of scenarios, with the aim of generating discussion around the questions outlined above.
