Chatham House Climate Simulation

Published 09.12.25

On 1 December, four PAIS students travelled to Chatham House to take part in a climate change simulation organised by the British International Studies Association. The event offered an opportunity for students to gain insights into the inner workings of international climate diplomacy, recreating negotiations held under the auspices of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Warwick students represented Kenya and Azerbaijan alongside participants from several universities across the UK. Ayomide Labiyi (MA Public Policy), representing Kenya together with Emma Cowen (BA Politics and International Studies), commented:

"I had an exceptional teammate… and together we had an incredible opportunity to advocate for greenhouse gas emission reductions, climate finance, and stronger global climate action. It was such an incredible hands-on experience that challenged my thinking and strengthened my passion for climate policy.”

Haley Flower (MA Politics of Climate Change) and Ashwin Aggarwal (BA History and Politics), representing Azerbaijan, were judged to be one of the winning teams, putting in an impressive performance during the negotiations. Overall, it was an inspiring and highly rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Professor Juanita Elias who accompanied the students to Chatham House, commented:

“It was a really special and intellectually stimulating event. The success of our students reflects the incredibly hard work that they put in preparing for the simulation and their passion for climate politics - a passion they have developed through studying these issues as part of their degree with leading expert Professor Caroline Kuzemko”
