New article from Dr. Maria Koinova "Armenian Diaspora Mobilization in Unity and Diversity"

Dr. Maria Koinova published a new article on the Armenian diaspora mobilisation for genocide recognition in a special issue on the Southern Caucasus of Osteuropa, 7-10, 2015, pp. 285-298 (in German, English version to follow in 2016). This research has been conducted with funding from the European Research Council Starting Grant "Diasporas and Contested Sovereignty."

In 1915 close to 1.5 million Armenians lost their lives during the genocide committed by the collapsing Ottoman Empire. Numerous others were expelled and became refugees in neighboring and distant countries. The Armenian diaspora is fighting since then for the recognition of this crime against humanity as genocide. Large Armenian diaspora communities live at present primarily in the US, France, the Middle East, and Russia. The Armenian diaspora is an important economic factor for Armenia, but its strong influence is not without problems. The diaspora often holds an uncompromising stance, which brings difficulties to finding pragmatic solutions to contentious politics related to Nagorno-Karabakh and Turkey.
