New Report: What Do British Politicians think?

Dr Mitya Pearson (University of Warwick) and Dr David Jeffery (University of Liverpool) have published a new report entitled ‘What Do British Politicians think?’.
The report presents new polling of Westminster MPs and local councillors from across the UK on a range of topical policy questions. The survey results are directly compared to identical polling of the UK public, giving a detailed account of what British politicians think about key policy debates and how this compares to public opinion.

The polling, funded by a British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grant, tested the attitudes of MPs and councillors on a range of topics such as the NHS, the European Union and climate change.

The report finds substantial similarity between the attitudes of citizens and political elites in the UK. However, it also highlights notable points of disagreement in areas including immigration, criminal sentencing and housebuilding.
