Tom Parr’s New Book Sparks Debate on Work, Justice, and Automation
Tom Parr (PAIS) is drawing attention with his new book, Empowering Workers in an Age of AutomationLink opens in a new window (Oxford University Press, 2025). The book explores how labour market policy should respond to the challenges of automation, insecure work, and growing inequality—offering a bold new framework he calls the “empowerment model.”
On September 17th, Parr presented his ideas to the Job Quality Network, and the conversation continued with an author-meets-critics symposium at Aarhus University on September 27th, followed by a launch event at the LSE on October 2nd.
As automation reshapes the labour market, Parr argues that low-skilled workers face increasing precarity, with serious consequences for equality, job quality, and family life. His book offers practical and philosophical insights into how we might build a fairer future of work.
