British Academy Grant Success: 'Waves of imperialism'
PAIS's Tom Long and Carsten-Andreas Schulz (PI, Cambridge University) have been awarded a British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grant for their new project, "Waves of Imperialism: ‘Effective Occupation’ in Chile’s Annexation of Rapa Nui in 1888." Extending their AHRC-funded research, the project will explore the only episode of South American "saltwater imperialism", namely, Chile's annexation of Rapa Nui (aka Easter Island) in 1888. In joining the scramble for Pacific Island colonies, Chilean officials appeared to accept and adopt new doctrines of "effective occupation" of conquered territory that had been advanced at the 1884-85 Berlin Conference on West Africa. By undertaking multinational archival research, the project seeks to shed light on the connections between that conference, infamous for its role in advancing the "Scramble for Africa", and views of colonization and empire in Latin America.
