Geopolitics, Propaganda, and Policy: Understanding Indonesia’s Response to Russia’s War

Date: Tuesday 27th May

Time: 13:15 -14:30

Venue: OC1.02, The Oculus

This talk explores Russia’s influence in the Indo-Pacific, with a focus on Indonesia’s geopolitical positioning, media and societal narratives, and policy responses to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I will begin by examining Russia’s broader strategic objectives in the region, particularly its use of propaganda, disinformation, and diplomatic engagements to shape public opinion and elite perceptions. I will then shift to Indonesia’s response, analysing the government’s official stance, public discourse, and the role of local media in amplifying or countering Russian narratives. Finally, the talk assesses the broader implications for Indonesia’s foreign policy, geopolitical dynamics in the region (particularly with the current US-Russia rapprochement), and the resilience of democratic societies in the face of foreign influence campaigns.

Radityo Dharmaputra is a lecturer at the Department of International Relations, Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia.
