Out now: The Social Foundations of Global Finance (2025) Edited by Chris Clarke and Ben Clift

A new volume titled The Social Foundations of Global Finance has been published in tribute to the late Tim Sinclair, a pioneering scholar whose work reshaped our understanding of global financial systems. Sinclair, who sadly passed away in 2022, was renowned for his unique approach to interrogating the social underpinnings of global finance, revealing the power relations and private authority embedded within the global political economy.

This collection - edited by Chris Clarke and Ben Clift - brings together original contributions from a range of scholars deeply influenced by Sinclair’s work. Through critical engagement with his social foundations approach, the volume explores the institutional complexities of global financial markets and the ideational and intersubjective processes that construct economic legitimacy.

Contributors include current and former members of PAIS at Warwick—Dan Wood, Johannes Petry, Fumihito Gotoh, Matthew Watson, and Chris Clarke—alongside esteemed scholars Aida Hozic, Randall Germain, and Magnus Ryner. Together, they offer fresh perspectives on the politics of global finance, continuing Sinclair’s legacy of intellectual innovation and critical inquiry.

The book is available in paperback and open access via Agenda Publishing. Further information can be found here.
