Climate change and the politics of free expression

The Environmental Politics cluster in PAIS was represented in a workshop on the "Climate change and the politics of free expression" organised by the University of Amsterdam on February 14, 2025. Sadi Shanaah, a research fellow in PAIS, presented in the first, academic, panel on "P/CVE policies: Masking the failure and reasserting the power of the state".

The presentation drew heavily on a book, "The Politics of Preventing Violent Extremism", which will be out in a few months by Oxford University Press, and is co-authored with Professor Charlotte Heath-Kelly (also from PAIS). It outlined the ways modern policies on preventing extremism negatively impact fundamental norms and institutions of liberal democratic societies, including climate and environmental activism. The second panel of the workshop featured mostly human rights and environmental activists who presented on how state oppression of activism can be resisted.
