Özlem Atikcan has been awarded a Monash-Warwick Alliance Research Activation Fund grant, together with Charles Crabtree at Monash University. The project is called 'The Frame-Effect Gap: Discourse Networks, Moral Foundations, and Public Opinion on Modern Slavery in the UK and Australia' and it investigates how human rights organisations frame modern slavery and whether the frames they use are effective in shaping public support for anti-slavery policies. The research combines Discourse Network Analysis with survey experiments in the UK and Australia. It will map how modern slavery is discussed across parliamentary debates, international organisations, NGOs and social media, before testing the effects of real-world advocacy frames on public attitudes towards policies including supply-chain regulation, victim protection and enforcement.
