International Workshop “Unpacking the Sending State: Regimes, Institutions, and Non-state Actors in Diaspora and Emigration Politics”
On 12-13 September, 2016 Warwick University will host the international workshop “Unpacking the Sending State: Regimes, Institutions, and non-State Actors in Diaspora & Emigration Politics,” conducted with the sponsorship of the International Studies Association and the ERC Starting Grant “Diasporas and Contested Sovereignty.”
This workshop seeks to understand how regimes, institutions and non-actors shape sending states’ extraterritorial engagement with migrants and diaspora populations abroad. This is the second workshop to be convened as part of a venture research grant, sponsored by the International Studies Association. This emerging research agenda seeks to consolidate ideas on international migration politics within the fields of International Relations and Comparative Politics on issues of statehood, conflicts and security, democratization, authoritarianism, political economy, and political geography. The focus of the Warwick workshop will be on the role of political regimes.

A Keynote speech “State and Local Policy Regimes: Immigration Reception and Immigrant Engagement” will be given by Professor Michael Jones-Correa (University of Pennsylvania) on 12 September 16:00 – 18:00 at Radcliffe Conference Centre at Warwick University. Professor Michael Jones-Correa (University of Pennsylvania) will give a keynote speech “State and Local Policy Regimes: Immigration Reception and Immigrant Engagement” to address the workshop on 12 September, 2016, Monday, 16:00 - 18:00 in Radcliffe at Warwick University. Four PAIS undergraduates 'Highly Commended' at UG Awards
No less than four of our undergraduate students received the honour of being Highly Commended Entrants in the Politics & International Relations category of this year’s Undergraduate Awards competition.
Juanita Elias & Lena Rethel publish co-edited book with Cambridge University Press
Dr. Juanita Elias and Dr. Lena Rethel have recently published the book The Everyday Political Economy of Southeast Asia with Cambridge University press. The book - a project that had its roots in a workshop co-sponsored by the Universities of Warwick and Griffith University Australia in 2012 - brings together a number of authors working on a variety of Southeast Asian countries. The cover photograph of the book was contributed by one of PAIS's former MA students Lee Shan Tse (double MA with the University of Waterloo). Although the book was published this month, the book had an early 'launch' in May at the Centre for Study Globalisation and Regionalisation.

Christopher Moran Elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society
Christopher Moran, Associate Professor of US National Security in PAIS, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
Founded and given its Royal Charter in 1868, the RHS is the UK’s foremost-learned society advancing the scholarly study of the past.
Fellowships are awarded to those who have made an original contribution to historical scholarship, typically through the authorship of monographs or a body of scholarly work similar in scale and impact to a monograph. Election is conducted by peer review.
