Dr Julia Welland wins Leverhulme ECF award and is appointed Assistant Professor in War Studies
We are delighted to announce that Dr Julia Welland, currently Teaching Fellow in International Security, has been awarded a prestigious three-year Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship. Her programme of research, entitled ‘The joy of war: pleasure and performance in contemporary military conduct’, uses case study research and interviews with serving military personnel and members of the public who engage in ‘social militarism’.
Following this success and plans to develop Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity in PAIS, we are delighted to announce that the University’s Academic Resourcing Committee has approved PAIS’ bid for Julia to be appointed to an indefinite Assistant Professorship in War Studies with effect from 1 September 2016. This post is designed to support the development of War Studies in PAIS – understood broadly to include topics such as the changing character of warfare and military command, gender and conflict, cyber warfare, urban warfare, peace studies, and the politics of anti-militarism – and the recent appointment of Professor Tony King to the Chair in War Studies.
Dr Caroline Kuzemko wins ESRC Future Research Leaders award
Dr Caroline Kuzemko, recently appointed to an indefinite Assistant Professorship in International Political Economy in PAIS, has won a prestigious ESRC Future Research Leaders grant.
This brings the total number of ESRC FRLs held in PAIS to 5. Other existing ESRC FRL award holders include Dr Julian Gruin, Dr Oz Hassan, Dr Charlotte Heath-Kelly, and Dr Alexandra Homolar.
Dr Kuzemko’s project, entitled ‘Local Authorities and Sustainable Energy Innovations: Decentralisation, Institutional Capacity and Civic Participation’, will commence in September 2016.

The Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) invite you to a one-day research conference for researchers across the discipline of political science and international relations.
The aim of the conference is to provide an opportunity for researchers in PAIS at all career levels to celebrate their research and receive useful feedback on work in progress.
PAIS appoints new Research and Teaching Fellow in Middle East Politics
We are delighted to introduce Sara Salem as the new Research and Teaching Fellow in Middle East Politics in PAIS. Sara will be supporting Dr Nicola Pratt’s AHRC-funded project, ‘Politics and Popular Culture in Egypt: Contested Narratives of the 25 January Revolution and its Aftermath’, and teaching a module on Middle East Politics. She will join us in September 2016 from the Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University, where she is currently completing her PhD in International Political Economy.
