PAIS Launches Teaching Project
The department of Politics and International Studies will be launching thirteen research assistant positions starting in the New Year. The aim of these positions is to involve undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD candidates directly in the ESRC-funded Transatlantic Interests and Democratic Possibilities in a Transforming Middle East project. This will not only complement the department's excellence in teaching and research, but innovate in the university's overall approach to research-led teaching.
As part of a large research team, successful candidates will become directly involved in the research project's analysis of Middle Eastern politics, US and EU foreign policy and help develop new techniques for mapping civil society and visualising big data. They will be taught the latest research techniques and be directly led by the project’s principal investigator Dr. Oz Hassan, becoming involved in Big Data Analysis, Social Media Analysis, Advanced Discourse Analysis and Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis. As such, in addition to providing candidates with valuable practical research experience, they will help push the boundaries of the latest research techniques.
In addition to this form of research-led teaching and training contributing to the already vibrant research culture of the department, the results of this project will be submitted to the UK Data Archive and be used internationally as a data resource for scholars and researchers. Candidates will also contribute to the project's wider impact, which has already seen the initial project research publicized around the world through various media outlets and fed directly to policy-makers in the UK, US and European Union.
