Nicola Pratt secures British Acadamy fellowship
Dr Nicola Pratt has been awarded a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship for a project entitled ‘Middle East Women: The Personal and the Geopolitical’. This is a highly prestigious and competitive fellowship, so our congratulations go to Nicola.
The “Arab spring” appears to present a paradox for women: they have participated in large numbers in the uprisings across the Middle East but their rights are threatened under newly-elected governments. Middle East women have a long history of involvement in social movements and civil society. Yet, women’s rights have not progressed in a linear fashion. Taking a new direction in the study of women and gender in the Middle East, this project assesses the significance of geopolitics in shaping women’s rights and participation in complex and often contradictory ways. Through women’s own narratives, Nicola Pratt will trace the history of women’s responses to major geopolitical events in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon and critically assess their impact on women’s rights and participation. Nicola will use the fellowship to research and write a book, tentatively entitled, ‘Middle East Women: The Personal and the Geopolitical’, and to contribute to public debates in the UK and internationally about women and gender in the Middle East.
National Student Survey - Final Opportunity to Take Part
You've got until Tuesday 30 April to have your say about PAIS in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2013. Open to final year undergraduate students, the survey takes just a few minutes to complete online.
NSS plays an important role in helping future students decide where to study and in ensuring that universities are achieving the high standards they set for themselves.
As an added incentive for taking part, PAIS will be holding a prize draw after the survey closes. If we achieve a response rate of at least 75 per cent (the university target) there will be a prize of a £250 holiday/travel voucher. There will also be four prizes of Amazon vouchers up to the value of the percentage response rate. So, if the response rate is 75 per cent, each voucher will be worth £75.
PAIS values your feedback and it will make a difference. Thank you very much for your time.
New internship opportunities available
In partnership with the Department of Politics and Public Administration at Universität Konstanz in Germany, PAIS is now able to offer current students a wealth of internship opportunities at organisations ranging from the International Crisis Group to the Berlin Civil Society Center.
Visit our new website under Life Beyond PAIS where you will find hand-picked listings of placement opportunities by our colleagues at Konstanz, not to mention regular digests provided by the German government. Although many of these opportunities are only suitable for German speakers, this digest contains worldwide opportunities for a wider audience as well. We receive a copy of the digest listing around every two weeks, so check here often to see what is being advertised at the moment.
