PAIS Zoomside Chat on Contemporary Militarism

Join the Gendering IR and Critical Military Studies working groups for an engaging panel discussion on Pleasure and Depletion in Contemporary Militarism (2026), a new book by Julia Welland from University of Warwick.

The book examines a compelling and complex question: why do many US service members, veterans, and military families continue to invest emotionally in militarism, even when faced with profound physical and psychological challenges?

The session will be chaired by Sarah Bulmer (University of Exeter), with contributions from a distinguished panel of scholars:

  • Kate Millar (London School of Economics and Political Science)
  • Shirin Rai (SOAS University of London)
  • Chris Rossdale (University of Bristol)

Bringing together diverse expertise, the panel promises a thought-provoking discussion on militarism, affect, and lived experiences. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a live Q&A session.
