DRAFT2019Double Degree with the IES at Vrije Universiteit Brussel

The latest addition to our portfolio of Double Masters programmes, the Double Degree with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is an exciting opportunity to combine any of our 10 MA specialisms in PAIS with advanced stufy of European politics and integration at the VUB's Institute for European Studies (IES).

The IES has extensive links to the EU institutions based in Brussels as well as NATO Headquarters, a range of governmental and diplomatic services, and non-governmental organisations; it is a top research institute and Jean Monnet Centre of Exellence. The IES offers dozens of events every year that enable its students to interact with policy-makers, scholars, stakeholders and the general public.

Programme content

During year one at Warwick, you will follow any of our MA programmes, and you’ll customise your degree through selecting the modules you find most interesting. During year two at IES, you will follow the Advanced Master in European Integration (‘EuroMaster’). Your Double Degree will culminate in a joint dissertation where you will synthesise the knowledge and methodologies learnt from both universities into one piece of unique research.

The EuroMaster is an interdisciplinary programme taught in English geared towards an international range of young and mid-level professionals as well as advanced students from across the political sciences. It provides students with advanced academic training across a wide range of EU policies and concepts in order to gain a thorough understanding of the process of European integration in both its economic and political dimensions. Its key features include:

  • Classes are organised in the evenings, so it is possible to secure daytime work experience alongside your studies in Year 2.
  • You get to choose 2 policy field specialisations, which will be mentioned on your degree. You can choose between European Economy; Migration and Europe: European External Relations and Security Policy; and European Environmental Governance
  • What sets IES apart is that the teaching staff is a unique mixture of renowned EU scholars and top-level EU practitioners. They go beyond textbook theories and give you real insights and outlooks drawn from their day-to-day professional experience.
  • It's a very international programme and has a balanced classroom mix of young professionals and full-time students.

At the end of the degree, you will earn an 'MA in Politics, International Studies and European Integration: [your specialism title] (double degree with Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium)' from Warwick as well as a corresponding Masters from VUB.

The student experience

The IES is a prime example of an academic institute that prepares Institution officials. Thoroughly embedded in the European sphere, and accessible to most students, the IES has this phenomenal role in making people’s dreams and objectives, including mine, possible.
- Bruno Duarte, MSc European Integration (2016)

The MA in International Relations allowed me to tackle a diversity of issues and build a new variety of skills, from theoretical knowledge to outstanding approaches and original perspectives. The department, the tutors, my classmates and my friends have helped me achieved goals that seemed out of reach and if I had to sum up my experience and the four fantastic years I spent here, I would say that the University of Warwick is the land of unsuspected and unexpected great opportunities and that its community never fails to lead us towards new horizons.
