The speakers will introduce what peer review is, and will present the peer review process for journals and funding bodies. They will also provide tips and advice on how to conduct peer review.

The speakers will talk about the different types of peer review you might get as an author (very positive, very negative, very short, incompetent) and how to address these. They will also discuss how reviews can be challenged.

Depending on the participants’ disciplinary backgrounds, participants will be put into smaller groups where participants will have the chance to practice peer reviewing. A facilitator will help the group to conduct peer reviewing exercises to raise awareness of participants on peer review training available and develop skills that will enable individuals to be constructive and effective reviewers.

These practical sessions will be devoted to reviewing participants’ documents. Depending on the participants’ disciplinary backgrounds, participants will work in groups or in pairs and they will have the chance to get feedback from their peers and academic colleagues on conference abstracts, journal articles and funding bids.

Participants will be provided a space to write reviews and/or work on their papers/grants. A peer review training from Publons will also be provided. A CV workshop will be delivered where participants will get an insight into academic and non academic CVs. Academic colleagues will be on site to help/read participants’ writing pieces.

16:00-17:30 CV workshop

In this session we will look at how to format and write your CV for both academic and non-academic job roles. We will focus on how you can present activities both within your research and outside of your research to demonstrate and communicate the skills and knowledge CV reviewers will be looking for. In the second half the session you will have the chance to review example documents or your own CVs* in groups to discuss how to create a positive impression.

(*participants are welcome to bring their current CV to the session although this is optional.)
